Actually, the upstream package already declares proper versioned dependencies, so “rm -r debian/patches” should be the only needed step. I notice upstream provide a testsuite, it’s unfortunate that the build system doesn’t use it, nor autopkgtest, it makes it way harder for everyone to notice possible regressions (on top of Symfony 5, PHP 8.1 is on its way for example).
