Currently I don't have time to investigate ... also I *have* been a bit puzzled by the rankMatrix(*, "qr") -- Matrix-only -- discrepancy that Dirk found. I agree it *would* be good to dig further, but that needs a chunk of dedicated time (and "free head") which I don't have for now.
