Somehow the main text of my bug report got dropped.  No clue how that
happened.  Anyway, here's the gist:

Attempting to install python-serial fails with the following error,
making the package impossible to use:

Errors were encountered while processing:
 python-serial
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
A package failed to install.  Trying to recover:
