These commands:
dpkg-divert --package gnotepad+-help --add --rename \
--divert /usr/share/gnome/help/gnotepad+/C/index.html.stub
/usr/share/gnome/help/gnotepad+/C/index.html
dpkg-divert --package gnotepad+-help --remove --rename \
--divert /usr/share/gnome/help/gnotepad+/C/index.html.gnotepad+
/usr/share/gnome/help/gnotepad+/C/index.html
should get you rid of the exact error message you are getting; without
access to the older versions, I don't know whether you will have other
ones.
