I currently have a 2.6.16 kernel installed which I built from the linux-source-2.6.16 (w/o the debian specific packages). However I also had the same problem with a 2.6.8 kernel (also custom built). The plan was to build a minimal 2.6.16 kernel to bootstrap the udev problems and then install an official kernel.
