Both of my etch machines running X has the same problem: attemplt to add keyboard layout switcher applet to palen leads to crash of X-server and gdm restart (like Ctrl-alt-backspace does). Moreover, starting a new session is impossible: after logging in gnome starts to load components and after panel appears X are crashing once again. The only solution is to manually remove keyboard layout applet from ~/.gconf/.../*.xml by hands.
