There's a patch here to libxml2 that purports to fix this bug: https://github.com/void-linux/void-packages/blob/884ef902190645863c97b29af5cfc2d4104c2078/srcpkgs/libxml2-python/patches/python3-utf8.patch which has been linked in my original itstool bug report at https://github.com/itstool/itstool/issues/36 I'll see one of these days whether applying it helps. /Lars
