I am running the latest stable kernels normally, currently 4.16.11 (actually .12 is out), and that has been the case since the 4.15 series (AFAIR). I downgraded all the nvidia stuff to 390.48-3 and with the same kernel (and the same error message of the kernel) all works back fine as normal:
