Whether they are used is somewhat irrelevant. :) We still distribute
them so they require attribution or removal.
Of these options, the former is prefered and trivial, whilst the latter
is unsightly and surely unnecessary. However if you are removing other
files from the upstream tarball (for legitimate reasons? it seems unclear
why you are removing other files..) then that might be the better
approach.
As the package maintainer, I leave it up to your judgement.
