I assume that this is due to the change of dependencies. The changelog
of -5 shows:
  * Remove the dependency on tetex-bin | tex-common, we can live without
    it. This also fixes the Priority failure of texinfo=standard depending
    on tex-common=optional.

So it might be that some files are missing, like tetex. If you need
latex or fonts or something, you should build depends on tetex.

More details when I checked this myself, but you could have sent
tramp.log by yourself, too. If oyu have it around by chance, please send
it.
