Hello Thomas, sorry for the late reply. I tried to compare the mawk_1.3.3.orig.tar.gz from the current package and it compares best to the initial commit in mawk-snapshots [v1_3_3] from 2008. (Without debian directory and different VCS tags.)
Since then the package just collected some patches on top of it. For that reason probably best would be to package the last snapshot from your repository [t20161120], like requested in bug [554167]. But I assume that unfortunately this solution is not possible for the currently running Stretch release, as new versions are not allowed. So the minimal solution for Stretch could be something like the patch in my last mail. Kind regards, Bernhard [v1_3_3] https://github.com/ThomasDickey/mawk-snapshots/commit/a0b5fad14fab8424f078e231fa056015470aa4c6 [t20161120] https://github.com/ThomasDickey/mawk-snapshots/commit/a27f2ad0b9422728318bfdaedb7af4c573b06f3c [554167] https://bugs.debian.org/554167
