Now, as freepats is in Recommends and probably does not need to be moved to Depends, I’ve got a suggestion for a fix: Preferably: change /etc/timidity/timidity.cfg so that /etc/timidity/freepats.cfg is only read/used if it exists. Otherwise: In the package postinst, if /etc/timidity/freepats.cfg does not exist, echo a warning (“install freepats or change /etc/timidity/timidity.cfg to not refer to it”).
