Unfortunately, this patch breaks compatibility with OpenSSL < 1.1.0, as the CRYPTO_zalloc function does not exist there. We want to still support backports, etc, without too much effort, so I'm thinking of using CRYPTO_malloc instead, which exists in at least 1.0.2j-1 as provided in stable.
