Bug#832965: merge with 831826

Bug 831826 and 832965 could be merged and extended to : shotwell crash 
at startup when language is french or spanish.

Command to reproduce :

        LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8 LC_CTYPE=fr_FR.UTF-8 shotwell

Command to start without problem

        LANG=en_US.UTF-8 LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 shotwell
