 it's not - it's a mixture of stuff from debian/testing, which i
upgrade continuously as-and-when.  other info: i have an intel laptop,
3d hardware rendering is enabled.

 the thing is, debian/stable (2.3.somethingsomething) works perfectly
well.  it's *only* this version - 2.4somethingsomething - that shows a
totally blank screen.

 any suggestions on things to try?
