Package: interchange
Version: 5.2.0-2
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 3.5
The upstream author emphatically states that Interchange only works with
unthreaded Perl. I've run siege tests on the sample data base and confirmed
that interchange fails with multiple threads. The package states via debconfig
that it requires unthreaded perl, yet there the dependency is for
perl >= 5.6.0-16 which is threaded. This is really a broken dependency as no
such package exists.
There are indications from the mailing list that interchange requires apache1
(probably due to the threaded mod-perl issues). There is no dependency,
suggests, recommends for < apache 2 yet a configuration script looks for an
apache1 config file.
The original issue of unthreaded perl goes back almost 2 years (see bug 199718)
Compounding this issue is the fact that there are dependencies in the debian
core packages for the threaded perl package.
Given that to create a workable system in testing requires running apache1,
creating a second unthreaded perl and mod-perl, and extensive editing of the
main program to point at these non existent packages, interchange should not
be in testing, but only unstable at this time.

This bug no longer applies to the Interchange packages in sid (same goes for
etch
after a possible migration):
* detection of Apache/Apache 2 webserver has been added
* Interchange should run in general with threaded Perl 5.8.7 (though slower
than with
unthreaded Perl)
