Hello Joachim, just a small addition:to some extend I could get resolution to e.g. 1024x768 by some commands "xrandr -s 1024x768" in a row.
When the resolution in ~/.config/monitors.xml is modified, then it does not resize and is quite usable. (If one takes the risk of using a self built tigervnc package ... the alternative is to change DE.)
