Package: macchanger
Version: 1.7.0-2
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I upgraded to macchanger version 1.7.0-2 on Saturday, and it completely
broke my wifi. I believe this is due to the new feature, where it
automatic changes the MAC address every time I connect.

I use Network Manager and the symptoms I experienced were as follows: I
was unable to connect to a wireless network a second time after an
initial connection (e.g. after resume from sleep, or simply by selecting
any network from the nm-applet menu) -- at least not without a long
delay between connection attempts. It affected both WPA and unencrypted
networks.

Using wpa_supplicant (or iwconfig) by itself (along with dhclient)
worked fine, presumably because this did not run the scripts in if-pre-up.d.

Please make this new feature of macchanger more visible (for example, by
mentioning it in the package description) and consider asking the user
at install time whether they want it enabled or not (for example, using
debconf).

I'm sorry if I come off as exasperated, demanding, and bordering on rude
-- this is a nice feature to have, but it didn't work for me and I spent
a lot of time over the past few days trying to figure out why my wifi
was all but unusable.

Thank you.

In case it's a hardware-specific problem, my wireless card is:
02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM43224
802.11a/b/g/n [14e4:4353] (rev 01)

I tried kernel versions 3.16-2-amd64 and 3.16-3-amd64. I tried both the
open-source brcmsmac driver and the propriatary wl driver (versions
6.30.223.248-1 and 6.30.223.248-2). This did not appear to make a
difference. The issue affected wpasupplicant versions 2.2-1 and 2.3-1.
