It seems related to GNOME enabling EGL/Wayland support. The first version of clutter-1.0 with EGL support enabled that migrated to testing was 1.18.0-2. It came to testing in the beginning of April. That was around the time I first got a black screen instead of gdm3. As a workaround I switched to the free radeonsi driver.
