I have also tested GDM 3.8. Unfortunately, all I see is a blank screen. I heard that Gnome 3.6 and higher requires systemd to work. So I installed the sytsemd packages (without its recommended packages) but the screen remains blank. Then I figured out that I need to install the "libpam-systemd" package too. It works!
