Installation of apt-show-version failed today, because I manually deleted
the cache files (they're *cache* files, so absence must be handled).
removing old cache files

or directory
/bin/rm: cannot remove ‘/var/cache/apt-show-versions/ipackages’: No such file
or directory
dpkg: error processing apt-show-versions (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

And, Christoph, you did not answer my email about my C++ rewrite of
apt-show-versions which we'd like to include in APT. I really want
to discuss this with you before we take any action on the APT side.
