I do not think this warrants a release,

No, but it is in source now.

Anyway, with the patch a testsuite error appeared:
-------------------------------
PASS: equiv.test
/bin/bash: line 5: 17976 Killed TERM='' top_builddir="../.."
${dir}$tst
FAIL: errors.test
-------------------------------

Sadly I cannot provide more info on this...

Sadly, I cannot imagine how a change that can only affect the compilability
of a single module can possibly affect a test. :(
Ah, wait, before it didn't compile and never got to a test.
Now it compiles and fails in a test. All the more reason
for not quickly pushing a change. I will definitely need
all the test detritus to piece together the failure.
It would be especially helpful with:

  cd $top_builddir/autoopts/test
  make verbose TESTS=errors.test

because it will yield the exact reason the script shot down
its invoking autogen process. "line 5" is going to be pretty
early on -- as in the SHELL_INIT_STR string.

Anyway, I'll be waiting for whatever you can gather.

Thanks - Bruce
