It doesn't show up on the web buildd interface, but what happens on
hurd-i386 is this:

Build-Depends: base-files, base-passwd, bash, coreutils, dash, debianutils,
diffutils, dpkg, e2fsprogs, findutils, grep, gzip, hostname, +hurd,
ncurses-base, ncurses-bin, perl-base, sed, sysvinit-utils, sysvinit, tar,
bsdutils, util-linux, libc0.3-dev | libc-dev, gcc (>= +4:4.4.3), g++ (>=
4:4.4.3), make, dpkg-dev (>= 1.13.5), hurd-dev, debhelper (>= 9),
autotools-dev, intltool, docbook-xml, docbook-xsl, +libglib2.0-dev,
libgtk2.0-dev, libimlib2-dev, libmenu-cache1-dev, libx11-dev, lxappearance-dev
| lxappearance, openbox-dev, xsltproc

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 lxappearance-dev : Depends: lxappearance (= 0.5.1-2+b1) but it is not going to
be installed

i.e. the transition lxappearance-dev package which is still in sid gets
pulled since it's the first alternative in build-depends. But it depends
on an exact version of lxappearance, which is not available in sid any
more. Why has the lxappearance-dev package been dropped? AIUI, we will
need in Wheezy for smooth upgrades, and we need to keep until Wheezy
is released and all reverse build-depends show lxappearance as first
alternative.
