I was seeing this too on an Acer Ferrari 1000 laptop with UMS. Xterm worked fine, trying to start chromium would crash X.
Applying 6bda7ceda645e838723883d133d614def1511d16 on top of xserver-xorg-video-ati 6.14.4-2 fixes the issue.
