I'm still experiencing the bug, I launched emacs with -Q option and
loaded manually both auctex and preview-tex with:
(load "auctex.el" nil t t)
(load "preview-latex.el" nil t t)
then I opened the provided circ.tex and used the menu preview>section
in the first section and I got the following output and no previews displayed.
No patches applied yet.
Try the patch mentioned in this report. If you want, you can try the
patched version I have at http://bulldog.duhs.duke.edu/~faheem/auctex/
