It just occured to me, that for pdns to work as $named (ie doing any DNS lookup), the recursor should be running too. To ensure this, the insserv.conf.d/ file should have this content: $named pdns +pdns-recursor The + make the recursor a optional dependency, to make sure init.d scripts do not fail to install if it is not installed.
