In order to find out where it failed, I modified the postinst script as follows:

files=$(dpkg -L python2.6 | sed -n '/^\/usr\/lib\/python2.6\/.*\.py$/p')
for file in $files
do
echo "Processing '$file'"
python2.6 /usr/lib/python2.6/py_compile.py $file
done
Running that script indicated it failed at the folling file:
Processing '/usr/lib/python2.6/io.py'
