I think that cabal-install is not compatible with Cabal-1.8.0.2, but I assume
this is a dependency problem on ghc-6.12.1?

Your installation is messed up. I suspect that you are using a local copy of cabal-install. Here's what it should look like (from a squeeze chroot): Try in a new user account or remove ~/.cabal and see if you can reproduce, please.
