By changing /etc/X11/default-display-manager
from
       /usr/bin/gdm
to
       /bin/false
thus disabling gnome, I was able to use the console in text mode.
So I'm assuming that it's not a hardware problem.

After upgrading my Squeeze system, my keyboard is non-responsive under X.
