Tomcat did not start and this was the top output from catalina_*.log: [ERROR] Digester - Begin event threw error <java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: org/apache/commons/modeler/BaseModelMBean (Unsupported major.minor version 48.0)>java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: org/apache/commons/modeler/BaseModelMBean (Unsupported major.minor version 48.0) at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass0(Native Method) ... Looking around for the "Unsupported major.minor" error message turned up that this was for classes compiled with jdk 1.4 which are trying to be loaded by jdk 1.3 or earlier. Installing blackdown jdk 1.4 packages (which need an "unstable" dist line in apt sources.list, other dists don't have them) makes the error go away. Off course, there is still the missing -webapps startup issue then, but that's another bug (which has been filed by others already) Since tomcat dependencies state jdk 1.3 is sufficient, those dependencies are clearly wrong :) Regards, Filip -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.4.27-2-686-smp Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Versions of packages tomcat4 depends on: ii adduser 3.63 Add and remove users and groups ii apache2-common 2.0.54-4 next generation, scalable, extenda ii apache2-utils [apache-utils] 2.0.54-4 utility programs for webservers ii j2re1.3 [java-virtual-machin 1.3.1.02b-2 Blackdown Java(TM) 2 Runtime Envir ii j2sdk1.3 [java-compiler] 1.3.1.02b-2 Blackdown Java(TM) 2 SDK, Standard ii libcommons-beanutils-java 1.6.1-4 utility for manipulating JavaBeans ii libcommons-collections-java 2.1.1-3 A set of abstract data type interf ii libcommons-digester-java 1.5.0.1-4 Rule based XML Java object mapping ii libcommons-logging-java 1.0.4-2 The commmon wrapper interface for ii libtomcat4-java 4.1.31-3 Java Servlet engine -- core librar -- no debconf information -- [ The C functions select() and pselect() ] "Their function is identical, with three differences: ..." -- Linux select (2) manpage --------------------------------------- Received: (at 314364-close) by bugs.debian.org; 7 Aug 2005 21:10:14 +0000 >From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sun Aug 07 14:10:14 2005 Return-path: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Received: from katie by spohr.debian.org with local (Exim 3.36 1 (Debian)) id 1E1sHU-0000wT-00; Sun, 07 Aug 2005 14:02:04 -0700 From: Wolfgang Baer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] X-Katie: $Revision: 1.56 $ Subject: Bug#314364: fixed in libcommons-modeler-java 1.1-5 Message-Id: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sender: Archive Administrator <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Sun, 07 Aug 2005 14:02:04 -0700 Delivered-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.60-bugs.debian.org_2005_01_02 (1.212-2003-09-23-exp) on spohr.debian.org X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-6.0 required=4.0 tests=BAYES_00,HAS_BUG_NUMBER autolearn=no version=2.60-bugs.debian.org_2005_01_02 Source: libcommons-modeler-java Source-Version: 1.1-5 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of libcommons-modeler-java, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: libcommons-modeler-java-doc_1.1-5_all.deb to pool/main/libc/libcommons-modeler-java/libcommons-modeler-java-doc_1.1-5_all.deb libcommons-modeler-java_1.1-5.diff.gz to pool/main/libc/libcommons-modeler-java/libcommons-modeler-java_1.1-5.diff.gz libcommons-modeler-java_1.1-5.dsc to pool/main/libc/libcommons-modeler-java/libcommons-modeler-java_1.1-5.dsc libcommons-modeler-java_1.1-5_all.deb to pool/main/libc/libcommons-modeler-java/libcommons-modeler-java_1.1-5_all.deb A summary of the changes between this version and the previous one is attached.
