Apparently, popen fails in certain cases with glibc 2.9-0exp1. The bug causes it to return NULL and set errno to ENOSYS. Note that this does not occur always; sometimes it works fine, but any given piece of code will always act reproducibly. I will note that similar symptoms occur when dpkg attempts to run the triggers for the menu package, but not for any other package (as far as I can tell).
