I suspect this to be related to an amd64-specific bug in flex that was
fixed in flex 2.5.35-3, which means a broken flex was used for compiling
the current dovecot targeted for Lenny.
I believe the "patch" is to tighten flex build-dependency to be
"flex >= 2.5.35-3~". Please include that trailing "~" to ease
backporting.

It seems you were right, Timo: When I installed memtest86+ om slamuf
(the NFS storage server) an internal dpkg status file became corrupted.
Clearly a sign that the machine had quietly gone sick. I have no idea
why it showed only with IMAP activities, though.
Closing this as a false alarm. Thanks for the help!
