Subject: e2fsprogs: e2fsck does not complete check and reboots system Package: e2fsprogs Version: 1.41.0-3 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable
*** Please type your report below this line *** On my debian lenny box (ext3 file system, dumpe2fs output is reported below) the usage of program /sbin/e2fsck (version: 1.41.0-3) causes system reboot without completing PASS 1 PHASE and without any error or warning message. It happens when e2fsck is: 1) automatically executed after the 30th mount: in this case the system continuosly reboots (e2fsck never complete check); 2) manually executed during a boot in maintenance mode after e2fsck is interrupted by ctrl-c before it reboots: even if e2fsck is interrupted before reboot (e.g. ctrl-c), the system reboots anyway when I press ctrl-d to continue booting without check; if e2fsck is not interrupted, it reboots just as previously showed; 3) manually executed after a normal boot - if previous cases have been worked around (for example, the command '/sbin/e2fsck -f -d -n -v -C 1 /dev/hda5' causes system reboot without errors or warnings) So that, in case 1) or 2), the system becames unusable unless the file system check is disabled (changing /etc/fstab booting from a different disk or a rescue live CD). In case 3), e2fsck start showing triplets of data (using -C 1 option) starting from 1 1 734 and it always reboots shortly after the triplet 1 64 734 as showed below: Pass 1: Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes 1 0 734 1 1 734 1 2 734 1 3 734 1 4 734 [.. snip ..] 1 64 734 [.. here system reboot ..] When I check the file system using a previous version of e2fsck (for example booting from a Knoppix 5.1 live CD, giving the command 'fsck -c /dev/hda5'), e2fsck completes the check without errors nor wornings and reports that the system is clean, as showed below: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ su [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/ramdisk/home/knoppix# fsck -c /dev/hda5 fsck 1.40-WIP (14-Nov-2006) e2fsck 1.40-WIP (14-Nov-2006) Checking for bad blocks (read-only test): done Pass 1: Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes Pass 2: Checking directory structure Pass 3: Checking directory connectivity Pass 4: Checking reference counts Pass 5: Checking group summary information /: ***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***** /: 782447/12025856 files (6.0% non-contiguous), 9772536/24047289 blocks [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/ramdisk/home/knoppix# My debian lenny box works fine if I don't issue e2fs commands from latest verion (1.41.0-3) while a previous versions (for example 1.40-WIP (14-Nov-2006)) of e2fsck works fine (even if from a rescue disk). I suppose the problem arised when I installed the latest versione of e2fsck.
