I have downgraded the reportfrom grave to important because only scanning is affected, although scanning is a significant portion of the package there is more to HPLIP than scanning and none of those other functions appear to be affected. A quick look through src/hplip-2.8.6 shows a couple uses of scan_read and no definition of the function, but there are many more uses of scan_hpaio_read which appears to be defined in scan/sane/hpaio.c---it looks like a name change was incompletely carried out.
