Yes it should really use --numeric-ids. I know I had such a version but for some reason but now I see that it is not there. Maybe it has been removed. I will change the unstable/testing version, but I can not decide if etch can be updated or not. That is up to the release managers to decide. The upstream patches seems to be very close to what I have proposed before.
