Wow, thats an old one.  I don't recall what the circumstances were.  For
some reason I think it was udev that was causing that problem.  I half
remember that the contents of /dev for udev wound up on my hd due to a bug
in the udev init script, and I think this bug is what I found when I
booted like that, without udev.

This was several versions ago.  Guessing from what I said, I think a good
test to see if it still exists is to boot off the hd, with /dev/md* a link
into /dev/md/, and seeing if auto=yes still works.  I won't have time to
try this for myself for a few days, if it is necessary.
