I did a test-build on mips/unstable with an upstream 2.6.24-rcX kernel and it built fine. I believe the problems are caused by a set of kernel bugs which were fixed in the 2.6.20 - 2.6.22 series. The buildd kernels (2.6.16) also show severe performance degradation, which led to a backlog of pending package builds. I'm currently validating the stability of 2.6.24 on the same hardware as our buildds have, I hope the problem can be solved over this weekend.
