I will close this within a day or two. It is not my responsibility to make sure xvfb is not broken. The build is run via the script /usr/share/R/debian/r-cran.mk from the r-base-dev package --- and is executed in an _identical_ manner across several dozen packages requiring xvfb. No bug in my package. The autobuilders fail repeatedly on other arches too; this just works on x86 pbuilder.
