I am merging these bugs. Thanks, I had missed that IceWM could have been involved in this issue, even though I did have a look at some other recent bugs of xserver-xorg-core. I just installed xserver-xorg-core 2:1.4.1~git20071119 and ran Gnome, no problems there. So this indeed seems to be related to IceWM.
