Hi, just for the record, I also had this problem with 3.0.24-6etch6. Downdgrading to 3.0.24-6etch4 helped.
I also had random garbage in the OS field reported by smbclient. I saw the problem with the truncated directories on Windows NT 4.0 WS and also on Windows XP. However, mounting the same share on linux worked well, without truncating the directories.
