Thanks a lot for testing this and the suggested patch. Unfortunately I found that the patch breaks the package database handling. (It is possible to see this by comparing the unit tests before and after the patch.) I think the package database code is probably using the apt library in the wrong way - see bug #285360. The original author of the code is no longer available so it will take me some time to fix this properly.
