I really don't think this is terribly important to deal with. This
problem only affects users who were running testing or unstable (both of
which are development distributions) while the affected package was
present. I'd imagine that a very large proportion of the affected users
have already upgraded so won't benefit from any fix. For other users
blogging the upgrade path (or posting to -amd64) so that it shows up in
Google would probably be enough.

I also can't immediately think how to avoid the problem, though I must
confess that given the above I haven't tried terribly hard. Obviously,
the dependency is generated by dpkg-shlibdeps and I'm not inclined to
ignore it on this nor can I see any way of forcing the upgrade that
works with that dependency.

That said, if you come up with a suggestion for helping people upgrade
(or I have any bright ideas, for that matter) then I'd certainly
consider implementing it. If you do then please file it as a separate
wishlist bug - the handling of the upgrade from the systems with the
broken versions installed is a separate issue to the original breakage
and much less severe since it doesn't affect stable users.
