Okay, so rancid isn't completely unusable for you, but only fails in
combination with the HP5304XL. That's why I reduced the severity of
your bug report to "important".
At the moment, I'm starting as the new maintainer of rancid, but
cannot directly help with your problem. I don't have any HP switches,
so I cannot try this out myself. But I'll release a new package based
on 2.3.2a7 upstream version soon, which hopefully will solve your
HP5304XL problem, too.
