You are correct in that I don't know what causes the problems. But
I know the result: on the second $(MAKE) recursion the kernel_version.mk
expansion variables are broken. The variables contain the stderr output
("make[2]: Entering...") instead of stdout output of the recursive call
(despite the fact that $(MAKE) is called with the -s option...)

I think removing the kernel_version.mk feature is a quick solution
to make the kernel-package work again. The real problem can be solved
later with more time to look at it.
