*lightbulb* i've now spotted your mistake (and my oversight when parsing
your original report): exmh-async must not be prefixed with
a path; it's treated specially, as an internal keyword and like
give-away and sedit.

just change it to "exmh-async xterm -e vi" and it'll work.

true, the error message is a bit misleading. i'll have a look at making
this a bit more robust.
