The /usr/share/doc/gaim directory is empty, please fill it, show:
# dpkg -L gaim /usr/share/doc/gaim
This is correct, the package contains a symlink from gaim to gaim-data. The error is that I forgot that dpkg won't replace a symlink with a directory, or vice versa, because of undefined behaviour when the directory has contents. I've added a preinst that rmdir's the /usr/share/doc/gaim directory, and will upload now.
