You might be right after all,
when I tested with longer directory names I started to feel slow down
around #25, but entering #34 break the panels.
Then MC hang when I pressed "Ctrl+o" to hide/restore panels.
I created nested folder structure with the following command:
for n in $(seq 100); do DN="${DN}/notsolongdirnametotestnested_$n"; done;
mkdir -p "./${DN}"
I'm now convinced this is more serious than I thought.
