The conversation in bug #640120 led me to think that it shouldn't provide notification-daemon. It makes sense to me that that individual applications should not directly depend on notification-daemon, and that it should be up to the desktop environment to depend on its notification system of choice. As it is now, providing notification-daemon in notify-osd wouldn't stop it from being installed on a system that also has GNOME due to the way they have versionized their depends. So I don't see much gain in providing it. As things are now, notify-osd isn't really a drop in replacement for notification-daemon. All that said, if anyone is having real world issues due to this, I could re-add it. Do you have an actual use case where not providing notification-daemon is causing you a problem?
