I wouldn't think it would generate much noise if you only have it looking at news, rather than both news and changelogs. In my case, I have it installed on every machine I maintain, and it displays news everywhere, but only displays full changelogs on my personal laptop (which gets upgraded to latest sid regularly, and definitely sees everything new before any other machine does). > I have an idea.
