Since you already have to package other questionable software which isn't in Debian to use this, claiming that this change "breaks a working program" seems like a bit of a stretch. http://bugs.debian.org/635516 http://bugs.debian.org/515850 That one application outside of Debian with some dubious dependencies requires this doesn't mean it will be needed by anything else which has a future. As you rightly point out, there are things which exist outside of Debian which other people build for themselves.
